Can-Am Outlander XT 850 2025: A Powerful, Comfortable ATV Fully Equipped for Adventure

Today, I’m sharing my impressions after spending a weekend with the brand-new 2025 Outlander XT 850, built on the G3 platform. This Can-Am ATV was generously loaned to me by the team at Adrénaline Sports St-Georges. I’d also like to thank Martin and Frédéric Caron for giving me the opportunity to put this beast to the test on a variety of trails.

From the very first kilometres, I felt that the Outlander would be a top-tier machine. I truly enjoyed riding this ATV. Here are my thoughts following this test ride.

Comfort and Stability of the Can-Am Outlander XT 850: Exceptional Handling

From the very first kilometres, I was surprised by the flawless handling of the Outlander XT 850. The ATV’s steering is precise and stable, with no wobble, even at high speed. I constantly felt in control—a perfect blend of smoothness and power. I really appreciated that.

High-Performance, Comfortable Suspension

The suspension absorbs bumps effectively without transmitting harsh impacts to the handlebars. I even tested it on rougher terrain with holes, rocks, and roots. No matter what, the Outlander consistently delivered uniform and reassuring comfort. You’ll be able to cover long distances without feeling tired—trust me.

Cushy Seat and Excellent Riding Ergonomics

The seat on the Outlander XT 850 is soft and narrower than on other models. It allows for a natural and comfortable riding position. I found the ATV’s ergonomics carefully thought out, with controls well laid out. The gear selector shifts smoothly, making manoeuvres easy and quick.

Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering

The Tri-Mode Dynamic Power Steering automatically adjusts the level of assist based on the selected mode. The steering becomes firmer or lighter depending on the terrain and your preferences. This allows you to fine-tune every movement perfectly.

KLIM F3 Carbon Helmet and Edge Goggles: Unmatched Vision and Protection

Together, these features make the ride truly enjoyable and low-effort, even over long distances. You won’t tire as easily.

A Powerful Rotax Engine: 82 hp of Can-Am Muscle

I’m no mechanical expert, but I really appreciated the power of the Outlander XT 850’s 82 hp liquid-cooled Rotax V-twin engine. In my opinion, it’s the perfect amount of power for a machine like this—smooth enough to stay comfortable, but reactive when you want to have a little fun.

I found the cooling system fan worked well. Even after several brisk kilometres, I didn’t notice any overheating. In short, it’s a motor that inspires confidence and brings a lot of joy… without being intimidating.

Outlander XT 850 Design and Finish: An Eye-Catching ATV

The overall quality of the Outlander XT 850 won me over. Can-Am clearly paid attention to every detail, from the paint to the cargo box design. And I love the 14-inch aluminum wheels—they add a great style touch to the ATV. The overall look immediately catches the eye.

Smart Integrated Tech

The Outlander XT 850 also features an impressive set of instruments. The 7.6-inch digital display is clear and easy to read. I particularly like the D.E.S.S. chip key. This simple and secure system eliminates the need to carry a traditional key. These two features are also found on Ski-Doo snowmobiles, so I felt right at home.

Storage and Features to Suit Every Style

Smartphone Compartment

The Outlander XT 850 includes a smartphone compartment with a USB port, conveniently placed within reach to allow you to charge your device while riding.

Front and Rear Storage Boxes

To carry your gear, make use of the front and rear storage boxes. With a total capacity of 40 litres, the Outlander XT 850 is ready to meet the needs of all types of riders. Whether you’re a hunter, a worker, or a trail enthusiast, it has what you need.

LinQ Accessory Compatibility I especially appreciate the integrated LinQ anchor points, which make it easy to add a wide range of accessories. Can-Am’s LinQ lineup includes a variety of solid and secure boxes, bags, racks, and gun holders.

KLIM: Ultimate Off-Road Gear Built to Withstand the Test of Time

Outlander XT 850: Built for Performance and Efficiency

With its 1,588 kg (3,500 lb) winch capacity, the Outlander XT 850 can get you out of tough spots. Its towing capacity of 830 kg (1,830 lb) opens the door to a range of utility uses.

The three-level engine braking system is also very handy—especially if you need to descend steep slopes with a heavy load. Choose from one of three riding modes (Work, Standard, and Sport) depending on your needs. You can also easily switch from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive using the conveniently placed selector.

In terms of features, it’s hard to ask for more.

A Few Areas for Improvement on the Outlander XT 850

Storage Box Seal and Opening

First, the front box didn’t seem fully sealed. This could be specific to the unit I tested—or maybe I didn’t close it properly. That said, if you’re riding in rain or mud, be mindful of what you store in there.

Also, Can-Am could rethink the mechanism that holds the box open. The little rod you have to prop up isn’t very practical, in my opinion. I almost broke a nail 😄!

Starter Response Time

Lastly, the starter response time felt a little slow for me. This might have been due to a slightly weak battery, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

A Can-Am ATV That Combines Power, Fun, and Reliability

After spending the weekend discovering the 2025 Can-Am Outlander XT 850, I can confidently say I was truly impressed. This ATV manages to combine power, comfort, and versatility while remaining fun to ride.

I found the ride to be stable and reassuring, with an engine that delivers a lot of pleasure without being intimidating. Plus, the high build quality and variety of features really make a difference—whether you’re working, exploring, or just out having fun.

Of course, a few minor things could be improved. But overall, the Outlander XT 850 is a solid and well-thought-out ATV that makes you want to hit the trails again and again.

Test Ride of the Can-Am Outlander Max DPS 500: A Well-Balanced ATV

At the end of the day, I have very little to criticize. For me, it’s a huge favourite. If you’re looking for a versatile and reliable machine, I highly recommend taking it for a test ride.

Thanks again to the team at Adrénaline Sports St-Georges for the opportunity!
