Segway Villain SX10 Review: The Ultimate Sports Side-by-Side in Action!

Segway Villain SX10 côte-à-côte sportisports side-by-side

The sports side-by-side vehicle market is undeniably popular among enthusiasts. Segway has introduced what they believe to be the archetype of the perfect vehicle to tackle the most challenging trails in total comfort. During this short-term trial, we put the Segway Villain SX10 to the test.

Segway in the Recreational Market: An Impressive Surprise

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have expected Segway to enter the recreational vehicle market. To be honest, I’m extremely impressed by what they’ve presented so far. For those wondering, Segway now sells its products in Canada through a new distributor, who is making significant efforts to promote the brand. You’ve probably already seen it on social media or even out on the trails—the Segway Villain SX10 is hard to miss. Its design is undoubtedly based on its sportive aspirations.

Two Widths Available: 64 and 72 Inches

The Villain SX10 is available in standard (SX10 S) and premium (SX10 P) versions, both 64 inches wide. But you’ll also see the SX10 WP version on the market. It’s just one extra letter, but it makes a big difference. That “W” stands for “wide,” and refers to a 72-inch version. This wider version of the Villain offers better stability on all terrains. You can get 29-inch or 30-inch tires, depending on the version, with Beadlock rims.

Sportive and Aggressive Design: Analysis of the Segway Villain SX10

Without a doubt, the Villain SX10 has an intimidating presence. With bold lines and meticulous attention to detail, it exudes both a sportive and aggressive style. At first glance, I noticed its distinctive rounded shapes. Personally, I find its design completely successful. It really emphasizes its sports-oriented character.

Overall, the quality of the components used is impressive. I’m particularly impressed by the chromed steel chassis frame. It’s quite big, and the welding is flawless. The build quality, plastic alignment, and finish are truly fascinating.

The LED headlights, now a standard in the industry, provide better visibility and also give this sports side-by-side a sleek look. They help ensure you’re seen, and also allow you to clearly see the trail when night falls. Speaking of visibility, I’d like to highlight the design of the Villain SX10’s front hood. It offers excellent clearance for a clear view of the terrain, even when climbing steep, rugged inclines.

Room for Improvement

The half-door’s design complement the rounded lines of the bodywork nicely. However, I’d love to have full doors. These would provide better protection against water, mud, and snow.

Comfort and Safety

Now, let’s talk about the interior of the Villain SX10. Like the rest of the vehicle, the interior design clearly reflects its sportive ambitions. The seats are very comfortable and provide excellent lateral support. And I can’t overlook the embroidered Segway logo. The four-point harnesses are sturdy enough to create a real sense of security. I had no doubt that I would stay firmly in place even during extreme maneuvers.

What really sets the Villain apart from the competition, though, is its huge central display. I felt as if I was in my brand-new truck, considering how much technology is packed into this side-by-side. Segway is definitely raising the bar for other manufacturers!

Lots of Standard Accessories

The Segway Villain SX10 comes well equipped. First, the addition of the roof is undoubtedly a necessity. Then, the standard front winch is also a welcome feature. With a maximum capacity of 4,500 lb, it will definitely come in handy in precarious situations.

One of the big new features this year is the addition of the renowned CVTech clutch. To be honest, this completely changes the driving experience of the Villain, in my opinion. I found its acceleration more consistent without revving excessively.

At the rear, the Villain also features a tow hitch. That said, Segway remains somewhat discreet about its towing capacity. Nonetheless, I’m aware that towing isn’t its primary function.

Emergency Alerts in Case of an Accident

Among the technologies added to this vehicle are safety alerts. By configuring emergency contacts in the mobile app, it will automatically send them a text message with your GPS coordinates in case of a collision or rollover.

A Suspension That Lives Up to Its Claims

The front suspension is designed like many vehicles on the market. The double A-arm suspension with a stabilizer bar gives the Villain a 16-inch travel. Additionally, the shocks are fully adjustable. Personally, I love the look of the rear-mounted reservoirs, which leave no doubt about this side-by-side’s potential.

As for the rear suspension, the swingarms offer 18 inches of travel, and I love Segway’s choice here. This setup allows the tires to maintain constant contact with the ground, with their central tread remaining engaged, instead of cambering like with a double A-arm suspension.

Advanced Differential and Transmission

The front differential on the Villain SX10 allows you to switch between two- and four-wheel drive with ease. The front differential lock can be engaged manually while in motion. Being able to activate this lock on the fly is a great idea! It means you don’t have to bring the vehicle to a complete stop to perform the maneuver.

Powerful Engine

A 1,000 cc twin-cylinder engine powers all versions of the Segway Villain SX10. It delivers 105 hp. While not the most powerful in the industry, it holds its own well on winding trails. In fact, it even allows you to exit corners with controlled drifts if you so wish. It’s so easy to push the Villain to its limits because it inspires such confidence. Its low centre of gravity also helps tackle corners with confidence without doubting its handling.

Two Driving Modes

The Villain’s engine offers two driving modes: ECO and SPORT. The ECO mode is preferable at low speeds or during rock crawling, providing better throttle control. On the other hand, the SPORT mode delivers all the quick throttle response you could want.

Conclusion

In conclusion, if you’re looking for a sports side-by-side that gives you great value for your money, I highly recommend the Segway Villain SX10. It offers a level of modernity that’s hard to overlook. With the Segway Villain, you won’t go unnoticed, believe me!
