The Wolverine RMAX 1000 – Yamaha Is Showing Us What it’s All About

Famille Yamaha Wolverine RMAX

For many years now, fans of Yamaha products have been left unsatisfied at the annual launches. Many would like the manufacturer to offer sportier machines with more powerful engines. Five years ago, Yamaha took everyone by surprise when it introduced the YXZ to its side-by-side fleet. At the time, it was the manufacturer’s first pure-sport UTV. We have had to wait until 2021 to see a new model that triggers an adrenaline rush in us. It is now a done deal. So here’s the new Wolverine RMAX 1000 family.

Just like the YXZ, a few years ago, Yamaha didn’t skimp on the features of the Wolverine RMAX 1000. New chassis, new 1000 cc engine, new D-Mode system, big suspension and much more…

The look

The RMAX 1000 definitely has a new look that sets it apart from other Wolverine models. Yamaha has remained more conservative by not giving it the look of an ultra-sport machine like the YXZ, for example. I would have expected a look similar to the RZR or the Maverick Sport, but the manufacturer went with a more versatile look. The engineers opted for a Sport-Utility look.

However, when you take a closer look at it, from all angles, you’ll discover a look that has character, especially at the front. The lines are fluid and streamlined, while remaining a bit conservative. I also like the fact that the protective cage and the chassis components are now under the body.

Coming back to the front, the Wolverine RMAX 1000 has been superbly designed with LED headlights that are well integrated into the curves of the front radiator grille.

Engine

People have been asking Yamaha for a new engine for many years and this wish has now been granted. The manufacturer is presenting us with an all-new 999 cc twin-cylinder engine with a double overhead camshaft and 8 valves. The redline of this engine is at 8500 rpm. For the moment, the engine power has not been announced yet. However, everything seems to indicate that this engine was designed to offer an interesting performance. Indeed, looking at the manufacturer’s videos, it seems to be the case. Yamaha even claims that this engine is the most powerful in its class.

Suspension

In my opinion, it’s probably the element that stands out the most from all the teasers and the introductory video. The people at Yamaha seem to have set themselves the goal of building a side-by-side that can handle any terrain.

At the front, you have independent double-wishbone A-arms with a stabilizing bar and 36 cm (14 in) of travel. The rear suspension has independent double wishbones with 42.9 cm (16.9 in) of travel.

The shock absorbers are Fox QS3 with attached reservoir. They are equipped with a three-position knob that allows them to be adjusted without tools in a matter of seconds.

Ground clearance is 35.05 cm (13.8 in), and the suspension arms are arched to maximize ground clearance across most of the width of the vehicle.

The Wolverine RMAX 2 1000 tires are 30 inches while the RMAX 4 1000 tires are 29 inches. The basic versions have Dirt Commanders, while the SE versions are equipped with Carnivores.

D-Mode System

The D-Mode System is joining Yamaha’s quad line. The manufacturer has introduced it in a few snowmobile and motorcycle models over the last few years. This system offers three driving modes that optimize power delivery and engine braking. You can opt for Sport Mode, which is adapted for sportier trail riding, Trail Mode for more relaxed riding and finally, Crawl Mode for overcoming obstacles or more technical courses.

Cockpit

The cabin seems very well designed. We can see that Yamaha has paid attention to the smaller details. However, I noticed that there seems to be two digital gauges. There is one in front of the driver and a second one in the centre of the console. Is this standard, or is one of the gauges optional?

There are several locations available to add switches on the console and near the shift lever. There is also a place that seems to be reserved for the installation of an audio system. In essence, the vehicle can be accessorized while maintaining the original design of the cabin.
