Can-Am Commander XT 1000R — Versatility to Spare

I had the chance to do an exhaustive test of the Commander XT 1000R, and today I am pleased to share my impressions and observations. When considering purchasing a side-by-side vehicle, versatility is a top priority for many. Indeed, our quad must be able to meet our needs at all times. It’s no coincidence that sport-utility side-by-sides are popular with trail enthusiasts or those on fishing or hunting excursions in the forest.

Since its introduction in 2011, the Can-Am Commander has often been a logical choice for many quad riders. And for good reason! At one time, its great versatility gave it a significant advantage over most models offered. However, over time, other manufacturers have also entered the sport-utility side-by-side market. Thus, in 2021, Can-Am introduced the second generation of the Commander family.

Design

In terms of the aesthetics of the Commander XT 1000R, it’s safe to say Can-Am nailed it. Indeed, the design of the new generation Commanders is very successful. Its lines reflect its dual work and play nature. The placement and shape of the headlights and the relatively short front end give these models a lot of character.

The unit I tested was accessorized. It was equipped with a half windshield, a rear net, and side mirrors. This adds to the standard accessories such as the roof, bumpers, and 2,041 kg (4,500 lb) winch.

Engine

This wasn’t my first encounter with the Rotax 1000R engine. This engine delivers 100 hp of power, which is sufficient for our trail rides or forest paths. Additionally, the Commander XT 1000R features the iTC system, offering two modes: Sport and ECO. In Sport mode, the engine responds very quickly and vigorously when pressing the accelerator. In ECO mode, everything is more gradual. It’s a mode I would prefer for group rides.

Suspension

As soon as you take a look at the Commander XT 1000R, you notice there’s plenty of room for suspension travel. Indeed, there’s 31.8 cm (12.5 in) of travel at the front and 38.1 cm (15 in) at the rear. Thus, you can tackle the roughest trails while enjoying good comfort. Additionally, with a ground clearance of 33 cm (13 in), you can easily overcome large obstacles.

The only element that somewhat disappointed me is that the shocks are not adjustable in compression. However, I must admit that after riding more than 1,500 km, the suspension always performed well, even on very rough courses. It is, however, a bit stiffer than that of the Maverick Sport I have ridden in the past. This makes sense as the Commander is designed for work and can carry heavier loads. Therefore, the suspension must be able to support this additional weight.

Driving

Driving the Commander XT 1000R is pleasant. The DPS (Dynamic Power Steering) system does an excellent job. At a standstill, the assistance is more pronounced and gradually decreases as the vehicle accelerates. The DPS system eliminates shocks at the steering wheel when the tires encounter obstacles or holes. All this allows the driver to cover great distances without feeling arm fatigue at the end of the day.

Cabin

The cabin is very well done. The finish and choice of materials reflect the quality Can-Am has accustomed us to over the years. Seats are comfortable and easily adjustable. The large wheelbase (distance between the front and rear wheels) allows for a fairly spacious cabin for the legs. However, I am 170 cm tall and the legroom is good for me. It might be problematic for taller people.

In the cabin, there are two storage spaces. A large 15.6-liter waterproof storage is located in front of the passenger. A second 1.5-liter storage is located above the console in front of the steering wheel. The steering column and gauges are height adjustable.

A lesser-known feature for Commander owners is the presence of two storage compartments on the sides of the tilting cargo box. You can place tools on the right side and your spare belt on the left side.

Other Features

The tilting cargo box is spacious and allows us to carry up to 272.2 kg (600 lb). The vehicle is also equipped with a two-inch hitch receiver. You can then tow up to 907.2 kg (2 000 lb).

Test Framework

I mainly rode the Commander XT 1000R during a tour of the Gaspé Peninsula. I rode for seven days and covered 1,396 km. This vehicle is well suited for this type of trip as it offers good comfort, good performance, and plenty of storage for all the luggage you want to bring.

I was able to test the range in ECO mode. Indeed, on the last day of this trip, I rode over 240 km without having to add fuel. However, it was high time I reached a gas station.

I want to thank Can-Am for making this test possible. If you want more information, feel free to visit your favourite Can-Am dealer or check the manufacturer’s website. Of course, you can find several articles about the Commander family on InfoQuad.com.

Looking forward to seeing you on the trails!
