Finally, a 64″ Maverick X3 With Smart-Shox Suspension

It took four long years before one of my wishes in the Can-Am side-by-side (SxS) vehicle lineup came true. Indeed, since the introduction of the Smart-Shox semi-active suspension in 2021, I’ve been dreaming of a SxS equipped with this suspension, adapted for narrow trail riding. It’s important to remember that, until now, only certain 72″ (Maverick X3) or 78″ (Maverick R) models were equipped with it.

Why was I so impatient?

My impatience stemmed from the fact that Polaris has already been offering a semi-active suspension on the 64″ RZR Pro XP Ultimate since 2018. Indeed, since the introduction of the Dynamix technology, the American manufacturer has offered a model well suited for the trails of Northeastern America.

Year after year, Can-Am reserved its Smart-Shox technology for dunes or more “open” terrains. As a result, I felt a bit of frustration building up inside me.

That said, I fully understand that the market for very wide side-by-sides with oversized suspensions is significant for manufacturers. Judging by the number of models available on the market, the demand must be very strong and sustained. However, manufacturers like Can-Am must also consider the reality and demands of other markets, such as those in Eastern Canada and the United States.

With the announcement of the 2025 models, it seems that the requests of many enthusiasts and dealers have finally been heard!

The Unmatched Advantages of the Maverick X3 X DS Turbo RR with Smart-Shox

Can-Am is introducing the Maverick X3 X DS Turbo RR and Maverick X3 MAX X DS Turbo RR equipped with the semi-active Smart-Shox suspension. In my opinion, Can-Am has finally filled a gap in its ultra-sports SxS lineup, both in the two-seat and four-seat models.

With this model, ATV riders benefit from all the features and performance of the Maverick X3 X DS Turbo RR with manual adjustment suspension. However, the Smart-Shox technology adds an unprecedented level of comfort and driving stability. Indeed, this type of suspension allows for real-time automatic adjustment of the shock absorbers. Thus, each shock absorber will always offer the perfect adjustment when driving the vehicle.

This type of suspension allows you to get the most out of your SxS, especially on winding or very rough trails. Holes, rocks, bumps, tree roots, and other obstacles are no longer things to avoid! You just need to maintain your trajectory, and the suspension will easily absorb them while allowing you to maintain complete control.

Smart-Shox: The Technology Doesn’t Suit Every Rider

I must mention that semi-active suspensions are not recommended for all types of ATV riders. To take full advantage of them, you need to be a rider who enjoys pushing your SxS to the limit. In more conservative driving, you won’t see the benefits that Smart-Shox brings. Additionally, you need to be ready to invest an extra CA$2,800. At that price, the model with Fox 2.5 Podium RC2 manually adjustable suspension is more than sufficient for the vast majority of people.

If you’re considering the model with Smart-Shox, take some time to think before making your decision.

Will We See Further Expansion of the Smart-Shox Offering?

What’s the next step for the semi-active Smart-Shox suspension? I must say I’d be very curious to see the Maverick Sports X RC equipped with this suspension. I admit that the engine is not on par with the Maverick X3 or Maverick R. However, with its 100 HP and slightly higher centre of gravity, I can easily see the stability gains in corners that the Smart-Shox suspension could bring.

Quads and Basic Warranty: A Troubling Gap for Buyers?

We may have to wait for a redesign of the Maverick Sports chassis before seeing this type of technology implemented in this family of sport utility SxS vehicles. Who knows? Maybe Can-Am will grant another of my wishes in the years to come.
