Log Loader for ATV: A Complete Guide to the Best Options

chargeuse à bois pour quad

There are several ways to use an ATV. One of them is what we call in Quebec, “getting wood out.” What is the essential tool to have when you need to “get the wood” off your land? Today, I am talking about log loaders. Indeed, many landowners use a log loader attached to their ATV to load and remove their logs. Log loaders for ATVs can handle logs up to eight, ten, and sometimes even twelve feet long.

Different Log Loader Manufacturers for ATVs in Quebec

Quebec stands out in the manufacture of log loaders, and each manufacturer offers its own features and options. Renowned manufacturers from all regions produce solid, high-performance, and high-quality products.

Here are some log loader manufacturers:

At retailers in the province, you will also find brands from outside Quebec. Notably, Wallenstein from Ontario is one such example. You will also find some models from American, European, and Asian imports.

But how do you navigate through this multitude of brands and models? How can you know what technology or options are available? Today, we will demystify the various parts, features, and options that exist. This will help guide you in choosing your next purchase.

What Makes Up a Log Loader for ATVs?

A log loader consists of five main basic parts.

1. The Frame:

The standard length of a frame for a log loader for an ATV is eight feet. It is made of a solid base with welded post bases at each corner and in the middle. These welded bases allow for removable posts, which can be easily removed and rotated depending on the type of wood loading you are doing. The frame will also support the mast and hydraulic unit.

2. The Mast and Grapple:

This is the centrepiece of the loader. Depending on the manufacturer, the mast will have a reach that can vary between 9′ and 11′. The mast’s rotational movement allows for grabbing logs from each side of the loader. The grapple will grip the logs and can rotate 360 degrees.

3. The Axles:

When it comes to log loaders, tandem axles are a must. This is a central pivot axle system with four wheels. The two wheels on each side are mounted on independent pivots. This provides better stability on rough terrain and a better weight distribution, making it easier for your ATV to move it. Many manufacturers also offer an optional hydraulic axle system that allows you to move the axles from front to back to balance the load.

4. The Power and Hydraulic Unit:

Since we are discussing log loaders for ATVs, it is necessary to talk about the power and hydraulic unit. All operations on a log loader are hydraulic. The operator uses controls to steer and work with the loader.

To benefit from this hydraulic power, a power unit is needed. Most of the time, this is a hydraulic pump mounted and driven by a gasoline engine specifically dedicated to it.

5. Stabilizer Legs:

The stabilizer legs are two systems that are deployed on each side of the log loader before each use. There are two models: butterfly or telescopic. Both systems are good, and each manufacturer will present the pros and cons of each. Nevertheless, they are necessary for the proper functioning of the loader and for the safety of operations.

Other options are also available from several manufacturers. You could, among other things, add a hydraulic winch, a swivelling drawbar, a more powerful engine, or even a digging bucket and a loading bin.

Choosing the Right Log Loader

As mentioned above, each manufacturer in Quebec produces high-quality products. They are distributed through several ATV dealerships but are most often found at agricultural and forestry machinery dealers.

I recommend making your choice based on two criteria. First, determine which brand offers the options and features that best meet your needs. Second, and most importantly, consider which local dealer can provide you with the best service and value for money.

I hope this helps you shop for your next purchase!
