In 2011, when Can-Am introduced the Commander, the manufacturer created a new niche in the world of side-by-side vehicles, namely the Sport-Utility. For many years, this model has stood the test of time without major changes. The Commander was considered king and master of this market… At least until 2017, when Polaris General was launched.
With the Commander’s aging platform and the General’s presence, people were increasingly turning to the General when it was time to buy. This put Polaris in an excellent position in the increasingly popular Sport Utility side-by-side market.
However, the year 2021 changed the game completely for the American manufacturer. Indeed, Yamaha came to confuse the situation by taking everyone by surprise with the launch of the Wolverine RMax family. We could see the arrival of a serious competitor to the famous General.
And as if that wasn’t enough, Can-Am also chose the year 2021 to introduce the all-new Commander. So, from one alternative in 2020, future Sport Utility side-by-side buyers will be presented with three in 2021!
It’s a safe bet that when developing the RMax and the new Commander, Yamaha and Can-Am wanted to be able to offer models that would compare favorably to the Polaris General.
Each of the three manufacturers now offers an interesting range of sport utility side-by-side vehicles. Each one has its own unique features that set it apart from the others. Future buyers should take the time to compare the characteristics of each one in order to choose the one that is the most appropriate for their needs and use.
To conclude, I will now give you a summary of the different models available. I will stick to two-seaters in this article. Here are the Sport Utility side-by-side vehicles in order of their arrival on the market.
Polaris General
For 2021, the Polaris General (2-seater) is offered in several packages. All General models are powered by the 100hp ProStar 1000 twin-cylinder engine. Travel is 12.25 inches in the front and 13.2 inches in the rear. The XP models have 14 inches of travel both front and rear. Ground clearance is 12 inches for the General and 13.5 inches for the General XP.
They have a payload of 499 kg (1100 lbs) and a dump body with a capacity of 274 kg (600 lbs). They all have an electronic power steering system and a 35.9 liter fuel tank. Here are the main models offered:

Yamaha Wolverine RMax 2
Launched in 2021, the Wolverine RMax 2 are all powered by a 999cc twin-cylinder engine developing around 108 hp. The Wolverine RMax 2s have 36.1 cm (14.2 inches) of front wheel travel and 42.9 cm (16.9 inches) of rear wheel travel. Ground clearance is 35.05 cm (14 inches). All RMax 2s have 30-inch tires mounted on 14-inch aluminum wheels.
