Yamaha Wolverine X2: Evolution Without Compromise

I’ve always been a fan of Yamaha products. Over the years, I’ve owned several Yamaha quads and have never been disappointed. As my needs evolved, I transitioned to side-by-sides. Currently, I own a 2009 Rhino 700, but it’s starting to show its age, and replacement time is near. When I heard about Yamaha’s Wolverine lineup, I jumped at the chance to test one!

The Test Drive

Recently, thanks to Infoquad and Yamaha Motors Canada, I had the chance to test the Yamaha Wolverine X2 1000 SE. The vehicle in question was the 2024 Special Edition model. This version is powered by a robust 999

cc twin-cylinder engine paired with Yamaha’s legendary Ultramatic CVT transmission. It features 28-inch tires mounted on 14-inch wheels, a plastic roof, a foldable front windshield, and a winch. Let’s not forget the exclusive Special Edition colour celebrating Yamaha’s 50th anniversary in Canada.

It’s worth noting that I’m not someone who spends much time on trails. I use quads mostly for utility reasons, though I do enjoy the occasional ride through the forest or along a scenic trail.

First Impressions

When I first saw the Wolverine, my reaction was, “Wow!” What an evolution from my 15-year-old Rhino!

The Yamaha Wolverine is Yamaha’s utility-sport side-by-side. It’s available in several editions, ranging from a base 850 cc model to a sports-y 1000 cc version designed for off-road performance.

The 2024 Wolverine X2 SE 1000 I tested sits right in the middle. It offers breathtaking trail performance while maintaining its utilitarian capabilities. While the cabin can be somewhat noisy during acceleration or high-speed driving, it remains quiet and comfortable at lower speeds and during work tasks.

Yamaha Wolverine X2: Trail Performance Meets Utility Excellence

As mentioned earlier, the Yamaha Wolverine X2 makes you feel at ease immediately. Yamaha has always excelled at designing user-friendly, high-performing machines. Its fully adjustable independent suspension ensures incredible comfort on the trails or surprising rigidity when handling heavy loads. With a few clicks of the adjustment knobs, you can instantly modify the suspension’s stiffness and responsiveness.

The oversized A-arms, both front and rear, inspire confidence in the robustness and durability of the machine. While my Rhino was sturdy, the Wolverine takes it to an entirely new level.

One of the standout features of the Yamaha Wolverine X2 1000 is its remarkable versatility.

On trails, the power is evident. The combination of its twin-cylinder engine, Ultramatic CVT transmission, suspension system, and handling provides a thrilling yet secure riding experience.

For work, the communication between the transmission and the throttle is smooth and precise. This allows for efficient low-speed movement while ensuring that all the power is readily available when needed. The Wolverine X2 1000 is clearly designed to balance work and play seamlessly.

A Closer Look at the Specs

Size and Dimensions

The functional dimensions of the Wolverine X2 1000 make it a reliable companion for both work and trail adventures. While it’s larger than the Rhino, it doesn’t feel oversized, and you quickly adapt to its layout.

When compared to its current competitors:

  • It shares the same width (62 to 64 inches depending on tire options) as the Honda Pioneer 1000 and Kawasaki Teryx.
  • Its total length of 115 in and wheelbase of 83 in place it between the Honda Pioneer (117 in long, 80 in wheelbase) and the Kawasaki Teryx (118 in long, 88 in wheelbase).
  • The 28-in tires provide a 5-in ground clearance, allowing it to handle rough terrain with ease.

Engine and Drivetrain

The Wolverine X2 1000’s 999cc twin-cylinder engine delivers impressive performance with smooth and precise operation. Yamaha’s YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) system ensures an excellent balance between throttle input and the engine/transmission response. This makes slow, precise movements effortless while also offering exhilarating acceleration for more spirited driving.

Comfort and Visibility

Thanks to its dual utility-sport purpose, the seating position is both comfortable and ergonomic, providing an edge over sportier options. This setup makes getting in and out of the Wolverine easier, especially during tasks that require frequent stops. The large half-doors are user-friendly and secure.

One of the Wolverine’s standout features is its 360-degree visibility, which remains excellent despite its sporty profile. The power-assisted steering, ergonomic central console, and easy-to-read display panel further enhance the overall user experience.

Dump Bed

The Wolverine X2 1000 features a large tilting cargo bed capable of carrying up to 600 pounds. Its assisted lift system is both efficient and easy to operate. The plastic bed liner includes four interior tie-down points for securing loads.

Conclusion

Having owned multiple Yamaha vehicles over the past 30 years, I can confidently say that Yamaha remains true to its legacy. Sitting in the Wolverine X2 1000, you can feel the unmistakable DNA of the Japanese manufacturer—its design, craftsmanship, sound, and performance are unmistakable.

If you’re a fan of Yamaha products, you’re bound to fall in love with the Wolverine X2 1000.
