ToggleAfter several years away from the world of ATVs, I had the opportunity to test the Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI 2022.
Contextualizing My Past ATV Experiences
In the past, I owned a few ATVs like the Blaster and Forman from the 1980s. These machines were far from today’s technologies and CVT transmissions. I had been absent from the ATV scene for about twenty years, so there was a significant gap to bridge. You’ve probably read several reviews on these types of vehicles, but if, like me, you’re making a return to the world of ATVs, then you’re in the dark.
A Strong Comeback With the Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI 2022
In this article, I will delve into the mechanics of this all-terrain vehicle, its behavior on the trails, and its performance on muddy and rugged terrains. Additionally, I will present the available options on the model we tested and review both the positives and areas for improvement.
This machine can be useful at home, on the farm, or at the cottage. I had the opportunity to use it for both work and trail riding.
Key Observations
Power Steering
The power steering provides a new way of driving without straining your arms, a first for me. I’m pleasantly surprised and satisfied. With our snow-filled winters, I’m convinced you won’t regret this option. Imagine not having to struggle with chains in the winter; it’s truly a pleasure, I’m sure you’d agree.
Transmission
The traction is adjustable according to your needs and is easy to use with a button located on the throttle handle. In a fraction of a second, you can switch from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive. The gear selector, while somewhat rustic, proves to be very effective and functional. You have the following options for forward direction:
- “Low” for heavy-duty tasks requiring strength.
- “High” for speed.
- “Reverse” and “park” positions are also available on this lever.
Independent Suspension
The independent suspension on all four wheels offers flexibility in maneuvers and comfort during rides. Climbing over large rocks is easy thanks to ample wheel travel. You can even climb over stumps without circumventing them, as the shocks absorb impacts. At the end of the day, my back truly appreciates this feature. It’s nothing but joy and agility.
Dashboard
This console and its customizable digital display show you speed, engine RPM, distance traveled, and many other options. The display is clear and precise, so even during your rides, it’s easy to access. With gloves or mittens in winter, I can feel the buttons and manipulate them. However, navigation can be confusing, and button indications aren’t always easy to understand. Perhaps adding a directional function or a return button would make it easier to navigate.
EFI Injection System
The EFI injection system makes fuel consumption highly efficient. Starts are quick and immediate. If, by unfortunate chance, your ATV overturns, unlike carbureted models, it will restart instantly.
On the Road
Trail Riding
The Polaris Sportsman 570 is very maneuverable, and the independent suspension makes riding comfortable. While driving, I noticed that the engine could benefit from a more spirited acceleration response, which would make rides more exciting.
Rugged Terrains
The independent suspension allows you to climb obstacles while maintaining control of the vehicle. To avoid damage on obstacles, larger diameter tires are recommended. During my test, I got stuck on a stump while trying to cross it. The lack of clearance under the ATV was the cause of my immobilization. Larger tires would have been helpful for this adventure.
Soft Terrains
With the original configuration, it will be challenging not to get stuck. The mildly aggressive tires and the lack of ground clearance under the vehicle can pose problems. I suggest considering the installation of a winch if, like me, you enjoy playing in deep mud or snow. Also, remember that the belt ventilation outlet at the rear, near the wheels, could allow water to enter.
Features and Attractions of the Base Model Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI 2022
Returning to the world of ATVs, I’ve noticed that vehicle options and configurations have evolved significantly since my last experience. Personally, I greatly appreciated the factory-installed power steering. In the good old days, a day of ATV riding was almost tortured with a rigid rear end and no power steering. Your arms and back would suffer for 2 to 3 days.
The 12 V auxiliary outlets, like cigarette lighter-style ones or those from the manufacturer, are convenient for plugging in GPS devices or heated visors. A backlit digital dashboard with large digits that remain visible at a glance is truly fantastic! In the past, I often couldn’t see anything on an indicator dial in the dark.
Areas for Improvement
Original Tires
The original tires could be a bit more aggressive and have a larger diameter. If you’re riding in soft or obstacle-filled terrain, you risk getting stuck or damaging components.
Transmission Lever
I was surprised to find a fairly large speed control lever on the side of the engine. In my opinion, this harkens back to older mechanical systems, especially when you have a digital display with small selector buttons on the handlebars. The lever is straightforward to use, but it’s also easy to miss a gear change due to resistance and length.
Context: If, by unfortunate chance, you find yourself stuck in mud or snow and need to make a quick change to reverse direction, you’ll need a lot of luck! You’ll have to maneuver the lever without missing your gear, or you risk getting stuck or damaging the transmission.
Moisture in the Traction System
Perhaps the ventilation system could be redesigned. For example, I think an air outlet located directly in front of the right rear wheel would be ideal. I would be hesitant to take my Polaris Sportsman on a trail where I’d have to cross a river or stream of unknown depth. I feel that water infiltration would be inevitable. The plastic drainage plug could have been larger or better designed. If you tighten it too much, you risk breaking or damaging it, and it becomes difficult to remove.
Belt Replacement
Replacing the belt can be a complex task to perform in the middle of a ride. It is recommended to bring additional tools to be able to use them if needed. To make it easier for you, I’ve written a step-by-step guide on “How to Change the Belt of a Polaris Sportman 570 ATV.
Bolts and Nuts
Several nuts and bolts have different thread types, including metric and imperial. I recommend carefully selecting your bolts if you need to replace them.
In Conclusion
My return to the world of ATVs has made me realize that, like everything else on this planet, everything evolves. I’m pleased to have made this return by trying out the Polaris Sportsman 570. Although it’s an entry-level vehicle, I’ve had a great time and enjoyed the ride. Whether for a ride or at the cottage, it starts with the first turn of the key, is economical, and agile.
This machine is easy to work with, although sometimes access can be challenging. I use it as a test subject for my “InfoQuad Maintenance” columns, and I enjoy working with it. Furthermore, I invite you to customize it according to your preferences, making it more powerful and useful. Let me know how you’ve optimized it; I’m curious to see your creativity.
