Polaris has once again taken a big step towards its goal of becoming an environmentally responsible manufacturer. We still remember the announcement, in September 2020, of its partnership with ZERO Motorcycles for the development of electric vehicles. Their combined efforts are a key component of “rEV’d up”, Polaris’ long-term electrification strategy that aims to offer electric vehicle options in all of their major product categories by 2025, starting with all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and snowmobiles.
As a reminder, under this exclusive 10-year agreement, the largest contract in Zero’s history, Polaris will develop, manufacture and sell electrified ORVs and snowmobiles using Zero’s powertrain technology, hardware and software. As a result, Polaris is committed to being at the forefront and a forerunner in its fields for years to come.
Change the game in a significant way.
Why be half-hearted when we can set the tone clearly and eloquently? That’s probably the challenge that the designers have set themselves to create and put forward a vehicle that will now set the standards.
Wait a minute, didn’t Polaris already have an electric autoquad in its lineup?
The answer is yes, because Polaris is currently offering such a vehicle in its 2022 lineup. The standard Ranger EV runs on a common 48-volt electric system that produces 30 horsepower, has a payload capacity of 1,000 pounds and can tow a maximum of 1,500 pounds. Unofficially, the Ranger EV has a range of 56 kilometers and requires about eight hours for a full charge.
The arrival of the first vehicle from the partnership with ZERO Motorcycles.
December 1, 2021 is a date to be etched in Polaris’ rich history, as it marks a major change for years to come. The introduction of the 2023 Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic is a revolution and a giant step in the direction of electrification.
The utility ATV known as the Ranger needs no introduction from our Minnesota manufacturer. It is the ultimate heavy-duty vehicle with attributes and capabilities that are distinct from its class. It was the perfect choice to be the first standard in the next line of electrification.
The new electric Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic raises the bar for utility ATVs with 110 horsepower and 1,250 pounds of load capacity. The Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic has three front seats and is available in Premium and Ultimate versions. The Premium version is equipped with 14.9 kWh of lithium-ion battery capacity and offers an estimated range of up to 73 kilometers, while the Ultimate version has 29.8 kWh of battery capacity and offers an estimated range of up to 129 kilometers.
The Ultimate version also includes a 7-inch entertainment display powered by Ride Command technology and dash-mounted speakers. With this feature, Polaris offers riders the ability to see the estimated remaining range and battery charge status directly on this screen. It is also possible to drop a location point on its charging spot and plan the next charging spot at any time.
How fast can the Ranger XP Kinetic charge?
Both Ranger XP Kinetic models come with a built-in charging system (3kW for Premium and 6kW for Ultimate) and a combined Level 1 and 2 EV charging cable. This allows owners to charge from both 120-volt and 240-volt outlets. Polaris will also offer an accessory charger that will increase capacity to 6 kW for Premium models and 9 kW for Ultimate models.
In summary, what does this mean for consumers, exactly? With standard equipment, under ideal circumstances, the 2023 Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic can charge from 0% to a full charge in just five hours. Opting for the accessory charger cuts that time in half, resulting in only 2.5 hours of downtime.
Enhanced Ride Command.
In addition, the Ride Command feature has undergone major improvements that allow owners to better control both the vehicle and the driving experience. Whether it’s increased vehicle safety or staying on top of maintenance issues, with the touch of a button, Ride Command simplifies the powersports experience.
In addition, remote monitoring of vehicle information, including mileage, battery status and more, provides instant peace of mind. Owners can also stay on top of repairs and avoid unscheduled downtime with quick diagnostics of vehicle issues sent directly to their smartphone. The remote vehicle locator also allows owners to access the location of their autoquad directly from their phone, so hunters and hikers can easily find their way back to their vehicle. Finally, remote vehicle monitoring allows owners to prepare for the upcoming trip with insight into remaining charge time, miles, battery level, etc. right from their phone.
Refinement at its best.
We are well aware of many of the advantages of using an electric vehicle itself. The absence of the familiar detonating sounds of an internal combustion engine provides a smooth and soothing operation that directly relates to the experience so many people seek in correlation with nature. The approach of wildlife will be greatly facilitated by this stealth. The proximity and contact with animals can also be simplified.
The designers have taken into consideration the tasks to which this new vehicle will be assigned. As a result, the electric drivetrain will offer smooth and precise control during low-speed operation, so owners will have total control and confidence when towing, reversing or any other task requiring smooth and easy control. In return, the instant throttle response will provide the desired torque when needed.
Even more features.
The new Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic offers the best to facilitate many related tasks and increase the efficiency, performance and profitability of its user. A 12V outlet is available for accessory hookups or simply to charge a phone or laptop.
A newly designed shift lever includes up, down, neutral and park, and features a new integrated switch for forward and reverse, allowing enthusiasts to change direction with the flip of a switch. In addition to high and low speeds, the RANGER XP Kinetic also features three driving modes for maximum optimized versatility, depending on driving conditions and range management: Eco, Standard and Sport. The first, Eco, optimizes torque and top speed for maximum range. Standard mode offers good throttle response for everyday driving and moderate work, and Sport offers maximum throttle response for dynamic driving and more challenging tasks.
Of course, like all electric vehicles, the more effort you put into it, both in utility and recreational activities, the less battery life it will have.
To tackle the toughest terrain, designers equipped the 2023 Polaris Ranger Kinetic XP with 29-inch Pro Armor X-Terrain tires. Coupled with an independent suspension that provides 10 inches of travel, this autoquad will be able to clear obstacles with ease with its 14 inches of ground clearance.
More maintenance ease.
With fewer moving parts, Polaris estimates that the Ranger XP Kinetic’s maintenance costs will be up to 70% lower than a gasoline vehicle. Maintenance and replacement of wear parts are greatly reduced.
Customization accessories!
We like to equip our vehicles with accessories that correspond to our tastes and uses. As a result, the Polaris Ranger XP Kinetic is compatible with 95% of the existing Ranger XP 1000 accessories, including Pro Shield cab systems for all-season driving comfort. Additional available accessories include easy-to-install Pro HD winches for extra pulling power and Lock & Ride storage to keep tools and equipment secure while driving. In addition, Polaris has designed new accessories specifically for the RANGER XP Kinetic, including a fast-acting electric heater kit for a more comfortable ride during the colder months.
In conclusion, there is no doubt that Polaris is positioning itself in the electric ORV market with the arrival of this first autoquad in collaboration with ZERO Motorcycles. As for electric road vehicles, we are witnessing a revolution in this area for years to come. This manufacturer has simply set the standard for its competitors. The INFOQUAD team can’t wait to see how the competition responds. Don’t worry, we’ll be on the lookout to follow this issue closely.
